Having bandwidth issues? Alchemy has an alternative!

Last week I had a client share with me that they do not have the bandwidth to take on any more projects. This client is hopeful they will find more bandwidth in 2024. After the conversation I could not get this word “bandwidth” out of my head.

Over dinner I asked my computer engineering husband what bandwidth issues technically means. In true engineer fashion he declared “oh, well when the amount of data being transmitted over a network is insufficient, either due to network traffic, limited bandwidth availability or slow internet connection.” DUH!
To be clear, none of that really made any sense to me (like at all!), so, I translated this into “leadership speak”, and quickly realized that we, at The Alchemy Group, have a solution to bandwidth issues! We have an alternative.

Is your bandwidth issue due to NETWORK TRAFFIC? Do you have far too much information coming in, people coming at you, schedules to navigate?
Is your bandwidth issue due to LIMITED BANDWIDTH AVAILABILITY? Do you have zero space in your day to think, strategize, research … or even use the restroom? (Yes, I’ve coached many leaders on the importance of taking pee breaks.) Do you wish there would be more hours in a day?
Is your bandwidth issue due to a SLOW INTERNET CONNECTION? Are you leading from a place of depletion/overwhelm/exhaustion? Are you lacking resources to support you at work or at home?
THE bandwidth alternative …
In 2022 I had some serious bandwidth issues. My days were FULL and I was operating at warp speed, fueled often by adrenaline. I found myself often wishing and craving more space in my day. Unstructured space, to clear my mind and care for my body.
I soon realized that this strategy of “wishing for more space/bandwidth” was not working out for me … the space never appeared. It was time to adopt a new strategy - It was time to REVERSE ENGINEER the space; reverse engineer the bandwidth. It was time to declare the space first, and practice my way into it.
So, I courageously declared that I would be taking the month of August off from work. Now, just to be clear, I had to receive a LOT of coaching to remain committed to this choice. I had to work with some serious discomfort - I had to let go of the societal norms around work and time off (I grew up in a family where taking two weeks off was considered radical and borderline crazy). I had to let go of speed and the addiction to being plugged into work 100% of the time. I had to trust the business would be just fine without me.
Declaring the time off was the easy part. Staying in integrity with the choice was the grand challenge. I am thrilled to report that I did it - I successfully embraced 30 days “off”.
Now I am not sharing this with you to say that taking a month off is the solution to your bandwidth issues. I am sharing this as proof that bandwidth is priority #1. Bandwidth is reverse engineered - declare it first and then create your way in.
Time to engineer the doubt …
